Sbarro Axel Onyx - 1984

This small leisure station wagon is extrapolated from the Citroën Axel and takes its general lines from the Sbarro Windhound. The car can carry seven people, including two on folding seats facing each other in the trunk. It was presented at the 1984 Paris Motor Show.

Sbarro's first Citroën

I believe this was the first Citroën Franco Sbarro worked on. Many more followed, either by Sbarro himself or by his students. Some of these Citroëns were commissioned by Citroën itself. I don't know if this is the case here. It's amusing to see the great difference Sbarro makes between the Mercedes Gullwing of the same period and this low-end car of Romanian origin.
The lines are reminiscent of the Sbarro Windhound. The slatted grille, typical of Sbarro cars of this period, totally changes the look of the car. Admittedly, you can't tell the Axel from the original. The Onyx is virtually monochrome, both inside and out.
The Onyx name will be reused by Sbarro students for a restyled Citroën ZX.
Only three doors for this rather spacious little station wagon. Note the slatted rear lights.
