Sbarro Super Five - 1985

The Super Five, called Special FiveTurbo in the Geneva Show brochure, is a small city car introduced in 1985. It was overshadowed by the spectacular Sbarro Challenge, which drew all eyes to the Sbarro stand. Yet it could have been the talk of the town.

The Super Five is based on an R5 Alpine Turbo powertrain, whose rims it uses here.

Renault 5 Alpine Turbo

The Super Five Turbo was powered by the Renault 5 Alpine Turbo. It developed 110 hp, almost as much as the first Peugeot 205 GTIs. The car's styling is reminiscent of the Super Eight. The taillights look identical, which would mean they come from an Opel Ascona. Even the four upward-pointing tailpipes are reminiscent of the Super Eight. The bodywork is polyester, as always at Sbarro. The car's styling is not unpleasant, even if it's hard to compete with a 205 GTI.
The rear end is reminiscent of the Super Eight.

Interior luxury

The interior is particularly luxurious, as described in the presentation brochure distributed at the 1985 Geneva Motor Show. White leather covers the entire original R5 Alpine dashboard, with power seats. The gearshift lever would suggest an automatic gearbox, but that's just a guess. It's difficult to find precise information on this car.

Two models are thought to have been built. Indeed, the rare photographs reveal differences in the mirrors and rims. Unverified information suggests that one model was delivered to a royal family, while the other was used by Franco Sbarro's wife, Françoise Sbarro. Again, I have no certainty on this point.
