Renner

The project brief was to build a road-legal racing car based on a historic model. The model used was the superb 1964-1965 Porsche 904.

Interpretation

This is not a replica, but rather an evocation or interpretation of the Porsche 904. 24 students worked on the project over 54 days, from blank sheet to public presentation. They split into two groups, one for the bodywork and the other for the chassis.

The body

The body is, of course, the first thing you see. And there are few who haven't fallen under the Renner's spell. The lines are magnificent, beautifully evoking the car of the sixties. The design is pure, without any appendages such as fins or spoilers. The choice of color highlights the car, and the white line evokes the sports cars of the era.

The gearbox is visible from the rear, as on a Ferrari 288 GTO (photo by DDS photograph).

Japanese engine

The four-cylinder boxer engine powering the Renner was taken from a crashed Subaru Impreza STI, which served as the donor. The Subaru is a four-wheel-drive car with an automatic gearbox. But the students preferred to make the Renner a rear-wheel-drive car and offer it a six-speed mechanical gearbox. The gearbox is visible from the rear, as on a Ferrari 288 GTO. The rear end is particularly attractive, painted black with just two round lights.

Race

Renner is a name derived from the German rennen, meaning race. The car lives up to its name: everything is reminiscent of racing. The interior is very spartan and minimalist: a steering wheel, four dials, a large gearshift lever and two bucket seats.
