Bourlingueur - 2003

When Citroën entrusted the students at the Espera school with a brand-new, freshly restyled Berlingo, did they have any idea that they would turn it into a... Hummer? At least, that's how I first heard about the Bourlingueur. And I have to confess that, having not yet seen the machine, I remained skeptical. Until I received the first photos. The result is surprising, but convincing.

A dose of good Hummer

According to the press release, the Berlingo Bourlingueur's styling is "out door". Let's take things in order, starting with the top. The roof is lowered by ten centimetres, but the overall height is still 1.85 metres. The rear doors open "the wrong way", as on a Rolls-Royce Phantom. The wheel arches have been widened, with the Berlingo now reaching a width of two meters. New front and rear fascias have been added, along with a running board. The whole is supported by 80-centimeter-diameter 4x4 wheels.

A V6 in a Berlingo

Let's talk about the powertrain. Gone are the four-cylinder and diesel engines. Up front is a 220 hp V6. This is the same block found in the Citroën C5 and Peugeot 406. For the record, the Bourlingueur's block is stamped with the Peugeot lion, but covered with a chevron-stamped cover! No four-wheel drive, the car remains front-wheel drive, but benefits from improved FAM traction (I don't know any more). The gearbox is a 5-speed manual.

Wide horizons...

As usual, the work has been carried out with great care. The smallest details are proof of this, such as the double chevron on the inside of the front hood. The windscreen is now in two parts, with the wipers fixed to the top. The interior is finished in the same color as the body.

Citroën inspires Sbarro and his students to create superb cars. Last year, we were treated to the Picasso Cup, one of Sbarro's finest. The Bourlingueur, in a different style, is a nice vehicle. The final word will be that of the press release: "For all those who, on a daily basis in an urban environment, imagine great horizons, moments of escape and leisure".

In brief
1- Leisure vehicle ordered by Citroën
2- Based on Citroën Berlingo
3- The only Berlingo with a 220 hp V6 engine
